Bathroom Remodeling

What Is Included in a Full Bathroom Remodel?

When a contractor says 'full bathroom remodel,' what does that actually mean? The scope varies, but here's what a complete bathroom renovation typically includes — and what's considered an upgrade or add-on.

Published

Demolition and Prep

A full bathroom remodel starts with complete demolition: removing existing tile, flooring, vanity, toilet, tub or shower, and all fixtures down to the studs and subfloor. Debris is hauled away as part of the project.

After demo, the contractor inspects the subfloor, wall framing, and plumbing rough-in for any issues that need to be addressed before new materials go in. Water damage, mold, or outdated plumbing discovered at this stage is repaired before proceeding.

Waterproofing

Proper waterproofing is the most important — and most often skipped — part of a bathroom remodel. A full remodel includes a waterproofing membrane system (Schluter Kerdi, RedGard, or similar) applied to all shower walls and the shower floor before tile is installed.

Waterproofing is not optional. A shower that isn't properly waterproofed will leak water into the wall cavity, causing mold and structural damage that may not be visible for years. Always ask your contractor what waterproofing system they use.

Tile and Flooring

A full bathroom remodel includes new tile on the shower walls and floor, and new flooring throughout the bathroom. Tile selection, size, and pattern are chosen by the homeowner from the contractor's supplier or a tile showroom.

Standard inclusions: floor tile installation, shower wall tile installation, grout, and caulking at all transitions. Upgrades: heated tile floors, mosaic accent strips, large-format slab tile, or custom tile patterns.

Vanity and Countertop

A full remodel includes a new vanity (cabinet + countertop + sink), new faucet, and new mirror or medicine cabinet. The vanity can be a pre-assembled unit from a supplier or a custom-built cabinet with a separate countertop.

Upgrades: double vanity, custom cabinetry, vessel sink, wall-mounted vanity, or a stone countertop (quartz, marble, or granite).

Plumbing Fixtures

A full remodel includes new plumbing fixtures: toilet, showerhead, tub/shower valve and trim, and faucet. Fixture selection is made by the homeowner from a range of options.

Upgrades: a freestanding soaking tub, a rain head shower system, body sprays, a handheld wand, or a thermostatic valve system. These require additional rough-in plumbing and add to the project cost.

Lighting and Electrical

A full remodel includes new vanity lighting and a new exhaust fan (required by code in Fort Worth). Recessed lighting, heated floors, and additional circuits are upgrades.

All electrical work in a bathroom remodel requires a permit and inspection in Fort Worth.

Paint and Trim

A full remodel includes painting the walls and ceiling, new baseboard trim, and door casing. The bathroom is left move-in ready — no touch-up painting or trim work left for the homeowner.

What's NOT Included in a Standard Full Remodel

Items that are typically priced separately or as upgrades: moving plumbing to a new location, adding a window or skylight, expanding the bathroom footprint, heated floors, custom built-in storage, and towel warmers.

Always review the scope of work in your contract carefully. A detailed, itemized contract protects both you and the contractor and ensures there are no surprises about what's included.
